Leeds Friends are taking practical steps towards becoming a sustainable community

by The Friend Newsdesk 7th October 2011

Friends in Leeds say that solar panels fitted on the roof of their Meeting house have already saved as much carbon as would be used by driving from Glasgow to Brighton and back again.  The sixteen panels have been fitted on the roof of the Woodhouse Lane Meeting House opposite Leeds University. The development forms part of Leeds Friends’ attempts to contribute to a ‘low-carbon and sustainable community’.

Other possibilities under consideration include new heating systems, draft-proofing and shared household appliances. Leeds Quakers are also supporting local campaigns for better public transport. They are using Quaker Week to run a series of public events to explore sustainability and to ‘look at ways in which the world can be made a better place for all’.

The Meeting house is one of a number of religious buildings to have made environmental adaptations recently. The Baptist Union of Great Britain recently became the first major religious body to install solar panels on its national headquarters (2 September).
