Landscapes in the Light
The Light has hosted its first art exhibition
The refurbished Large Meeting House at Friends House in London has hosted its first art exhibition, ‘Climb up to the Moor’.
Artist Judith Bromley told the Friend she feels ‘very honoured’ to be involved in the first exhibition to be held in the space. The exhibition was organised by the Quaker Arts Network.
‘It’s wonderful to be able to use this venue for a Quaker purpose,’ she said. Judith added that up to half of the exhibition’s visitors had walked in off the street, making it an ‘incredible’ outreach experience.
With this touring exhibition, Judith aims to ‘bring the moorland into towns and cities’ and to draw people in and to deepen their awareness of the natural world, she explained. The exhibition shows paintings by Judith Bromley and Robert Nicholls.
Among the exhibits is ‘Groundcover’, an expanding collage floor installation. It was inspired by the colours and textures of the moorland floor, and includes the work of, among others, schools, Friends and members of the Women’s Institute.
The Large Meeting House is also known, for bookings by outside organisations, as ‘The Light’ and was built in 1926.
