A Quaker from Kenya spoke at Friends House last week about the different traditions of Quakerism. John Muhanji, director of the Africa Ministries Office of Friends United Meeting (FUM), talked on 10 October about the continuing influence of colonialism, and, according to Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM), ‘brought a lesson in creating welcoming Quaker communities in East Africa.

Describing Quaker churches, including those in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi, East Congo, Somalia and Tanzania, he said newcomers were welcomed to Meetings and then trained in Quaker ways. Some churches were fast-growing, some needed training in peace and reconciliation.’

He also said there are women and men pastors and more equality than within other churches and local cultures.

FUM brings together thirty-seven Yearly Meetings from a broad range of Quaker traditions.
