The marriage certificate of Quaker Katherine Barclay and Daniel Bell is being auctioned on the website eBay, with bids starting at £195.

The daughter of one of the Quaker founders of Barclays Bank, Katherine Barclay was married in Winchmore Hill in north London. The handwritten certificate is dated 1750 and printed in London.

The description made by the anonymous seller, based in Winchester, says: ‘An unusual and rare large Quaker Marriage Certificate, for the marriage of Daniel Bell and Katherine Barclay at Winchmore Hill London. The certificate has been signed by all relatives and friends present, including many of the Barclay family, of banking fame.’  It adds: ‘On vellum with tax stamp and folds as found. Good condition with creasing and marks and wear from age and handling.’

Friends House Library staff said that they were unable to buy the certificate but ‘would like to see it go to a safe home’.
