Judi Dench contributes to Olympic ceremony
Actor reads poem at Olympics
Oscar winner Judi Dench, who has been associated with Quakers all her life, featured in the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games broadcast across the world on Saturday.
She read an English translation of the classic poem ‘A Flor e a Hausea’ (Flower and Nausea) by the Brazilian writer Carlos Drummond de Andrade, after it was presented in Portugese.
The poem accompanied a scene in which a young boy is transfixed by the sight of a fragile plant emerging from concrete in a heavily polluted city.
The theme of sustainability, and the power of hope, was an important narrative in the ceremony.
