Huddersfield Friends recently organised two events featuring Sahar Vardi, an Israeli conscientious objector (CO) and peace activist.

Sahar spoke in Batley and Huddersfield on 22 September. Her talks were part of the Meeting’s ongoing commitment to hosting speakers on peace and nonviolence. She first talked to thirty students at Batley Girls High School, on ‘Militarisation of Israeli society – from classroom to arms fair’, and then at a public meeting in Huddersfield. More than seventy people attended the public meeting.

Mashuda Shaikh, a member of the Northern Friends Peace Board ‘Building Peace in Diverse Britain’ project group, said: ‘Whilst Sahar’s visit was short, it left us with a legacy pertinent not only to Friends but to all humanity. The two things which can help sow the seeds for peace one day, not just in Israel/Palestine, but everywhere, are hope and dialogue – hope in a better future and dialogue between those who have differing views.’
