Invisible violence in Kenya

Laura Shipler Chico reflects on recent events in Kenya and writes about Quaker peace initiatives in East Africa

On a recent Saturday afternoon a man and his thirteen-year-old daughter walked out of a shopping centre and climbed into their car. Moments later, the girl was shot in the leg and her father was dead.  It was 21 September and they had just become victims of the tragedy that unfolded at Nairobi’s Westgate shopping centre. As with every death, the ripples reverberated past the news coverage, touching the lives and work of many people, including British Quakers. This particular man’s name was Juan Ortiz-Iruri and he had served for a year as executive director of Change Agents for Peace International (CAPI), a Kenyan organisation founded by Quaker Service Norway.
