Stars, candles, twinkling fairy lights, warm firelit glow – what exactly is it that gives this image its seasonal charge? Would it work just as well if the curtain were drawn? Through the window panes the night is dark, with a hint of snow – or is it moonlight – between the heavy branches. The power of the image is surely its reassurance: we are inside, safe and cosy, definitely not out there. It conveys its message very well – but is it really what Christmas is all about?
