Huddersfield Friends are supporting a climate change campaign for a Fossil Free Kirklees. A member of Huddersfield Meeting was involved in the launch and helped to set up the petition. This prompted Quakers to officially back the campaign at Meeting for Worship for Business.

Huddersfield Quaker Chayley Collis told the Friend that the Meeting backed the initiative because it is ‘a powerful campaign getting at the heart of the climate change issue’. She added that the group had been inspired by Britain Yearly Meeting’s decision to disinvest from companies engaged in extracting fossil fuels.

The campaign aims to persuade Kirklees Council and other local institutions to disinvest from companies with stakes in fossil fuel. It also hopes to raise awareness of the timescale and urgency of the climate crisis and to convince individuals and organisations that investing in fossil fuels is no longer a good ethical or financial proposition.

Chayley said that she hoped that the Fossil Free Festival taking place at the Meeting house in November would see members of the local interfaith community become involved.
