Digital project to transcribe records of early Friends

Records from Philadelphia Quakers’ Monthly and Quarterly Meetings have been digitised as part of a project to preserve the records of early congregations in the state.

The records available to view include members lists, minutes, and travel certificates, and appear to date back to the late 1600s, starting with a list of members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. The records are held at Haverford and Swarthmore colleges.

Sharing the news on its Facebook page on 1 April, Friends House Library staff said they were ‘very excited’ about the resource, and that they have received many enquiries about the interactions between Quakers in the US and UK. They said that there were many records available and that they were ‘well organised and easy to view’. The resource can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/pqmrecords.

Friends House Library in London will remain closed until late 2021 as part of refurbishment work in the building.

‘We are giving the room a lick of paint, making our space more accessible and thinking about Covid-secure measures,’ staff posted on the Library’s Facebook page.
