Quakers throughout Britain took part in a wide range of events on Tuesday to commemorate Hiroshima Day.  Taunton Friends hosted a vigil in the town’s market square at noon to remember all those who lost their lives when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Maldon Quaker Meeting House hosted an ecumenical Candle Service for Peace in the evening.

In London, Friends attended the annual ceremony at the cherry tree in Tavistock Square. The cherry tree was planted in 1967 in remembrance of the victims, past and present, of the atomic bombs that were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945.
