Hexham debates
Topics from poverty to nuclear power to be covered in the coming weeks
Hexham Debates, which seek to carry on the tradition of active radical debate essential for ensuring freedom and justice for all, will be hosting a variety of meetings organised by Northumbrians for Peace and Hexham Meeting during the coming months.
The debates range from ‘The war against the poor in Britain’ to ‘Conflict, climate change and food’ and ‘Death, taxes and development’. Other topics to be covered will include ‘Globalisation’s Achilles heel’ and ‘Is there a place for new nuclear build in generating energy for civilian use?’
The speakers are drawn from academia and campaign groups. They include Paul Rogers, from the Bradford University Department of Peace Studies, and Paul Brannen, campaigns manager at Christian Aid. Other speakers include Cathy McCormack, a campaigner on housing, health, poverty and the environment, John Christensen, of the Tax Justice Network, and Frank Boulton, chair of Medact.
Past Hexham debates have included ‘Unarmed civilian peacekeeping’ by Tim Wallis, executive director of Nonviolent Peaceforce, ‘Rise of the drones’ by Chris Cole, secretary of the Drones Campaign Network, and ‘Lessons from Iraq on oil, war and democracy’ by Greg Muttitt, War on Want campaigns and policy director.
