Health inequality in Britain was the focus of a recent seminar in Westminster

Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, authors of the The Spirit Level, highlighted the stark reality of health inequality in Britain at a seminar held in Portcullis House, Westminster, on Thursday 20 July.

The seminar was organised by Taxpayers Against Poverty and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty. Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett spoke on behalf of the Equality Trust. Other speakers included David Finch, of the Resolution Foundation, and Angela Donkin, of the Institute of Health Equity.

The seminar asked: ‘How many more infant deaths and how much more diminished life expectancy does there have to be before UK national and local governments accept the overwhelming evidence that low incomes impact on mental and physical health?’

Citizens in Britain, it asserted, are ‘increasingly left at the mercy of a ruthless postcode lottery that dictates mortality rates and incidence of low birth-weight’.
