Friends in Birmingham greet the Olympic torch

Several Birmingham Quakers got up at 5am on a recent Sunday morning to make sure the tea and coffee were ready – for people greeting the Olympic torch.

On 1 July, a number of Birmingham residents watched the torch pass along the the A34 on its way from the city centre to Stratford-upon-Avon. Friends in Hall Green Meeting decided to ensure that hot drinks were on hand for the bystanders. They opened up their Meeting house and garden.

The Friends’ energy did not end there. After Meeting for Worship, they held a Business Meeting before setting off to the nearby Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre to run a barn dance. It raised £110 for Woodbrooke’s garden lounge extension appeal.

Hall Green Meeting’s Gill Coffin told the Friend it was ‘a long day’.
