Gretchen Castle, general secretary of Friends World Committee for Consultantion (FWCC), attended the inauguration Mass of Francis I on 19 March.

Gretchen, who represented the world wide Quaker family, had an audience with Francis I on 20 March.

She was one of only two women representing the different branches of the worldwide Christian communion.

Gretchen, a member of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in the United States, left for Rome following the FWCC Section of the Americas Meeting held near Indianapolis, Indiana.

Robin Mohr, executive secretary of the Section of the Americas, said, ‘It was a privilege to have Gretchen with us at our meeting and to be able to pray with and for her as she set off for Rome.’

Gretchen, earlier this week, said, ‘I am very excited and humbled to be representing Friends at this celebration. I bring greetings from Friends worldwide. Friends unite with pope Francis in his concern for the poor and the marginalised. May God bless him in his service.’
