Governments urged to act on climate change
COP22 signatories urge progress
Representatives of faith groups across the world have urged governments to act on climate change.
Quakers in Britain, the Friends World Committee for Consultation and the United Nations Office are among signatories to the COP 22 Interfaith Climate Change Statement to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon.
The Statement calls on nations to justly manage the transition to a low carbon economy and urges governments to shift trillions of investments in fossil fuels into renewable energy, in line with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Signatories include the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and more than 230 other faith leaders from around the globe.
Paul Parker, recording clerk of Britain Yearly Meeting, welcomed the Statement. He said that Quakers in Britain were committed to becoming a low-carbon sustainable community and had divested, as a national church, from companies involved in fossil fuel extraction.
