A ‘George Fox 400 programme’ will be officially announced by Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) on 1 January 2024. The programme of events is to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the co-founder of the Quaker movement, George Fox.

‘Even a month ahead of that though, there are fifteen events confirmed, hosted variously by Glenthorne Quaker guesthouse, the Quaker Tapestry Museum and Woodbrooke Online,’ said Tim Gee, general secretary of FWCC. ‘We are expecting more from various countries by January.’

The text to the new ‘Ballad of George Fox at 400’ has also been revealed, set to the tune ‘Slane’. ‘Last month [it] was sung by Friends together for the first time,’ said Tim Gee. ‘First at [Quaker Life’s] reps council in Abingdon, then at FWCC Asia West Pacific Gathering in Hong Kong. It was well received at both.’

‘The tune “Slane”, named after a hill, is variously used for the folk songs “With My Love on the Road”, “By the Banks of the Bann” and “The Hielan’s o’ Scotland”, and with Christian words as “Be thou my vision” and “Lord of all Hopefulness”,’ added Tim.
