G4S contract at Friends House cancelled

A security contract with G4S has been cancelled by Britain Yearly Meeting

Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) has terminated a contract with security services firm G4S.

G4S had provided maintenance for the access control system at Friends House for more than eight years. This will end on 3 August, when a three-month notice period expires.

This was the only contract BYM held with G4S, which had taken over the company with which the contract had been signed. A new access system will be installed, and will be maintained by Access Control Technology (ACT).

In his letter terminating the contract, Adrian Brough, senior facilities and property manager at Britain Yearly Meeting, wrote: ‘In Israel/Palestine… we are concerned about ongoing services G4S provides to the Israeli prison system.’

These provide, he wrote, ‘security services and systems to prisons and detention centres known to hold political prisoners and children without charge or trial’.

Adrian concluded: ‘The harmful treatment of asylum seekers, refugees, detained adults and children under G4S care, as well as G4S involvement in the criminal justice system in Britain, are all cause for concern.’
