Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) has released a video of its second webinar on the theme of sustainability and climate justice. The project follows the success of the first webinar ‘Quakers Coming Together to Care for the Earth’ in July 2019 and was launched on FWCC’s YouTube channel this month, after being created in October.

Faith Brindle, sustainability and communications support officer for FWCC, told the Friend that the webinar celebrates different Quaker climate activists in the Americas. ‘We were lucky enough to hear from four women from the FWCC Americas section,’ she said. ‘Emma Condori Mamani is a lifelong Quaker from La Paz, Bolivia, who is speaking out about climate change and access to clean water; Emily Wirzba lobbies on energy and environmental concerns for the Friends Committee on National Legislation (US); Beverly Ward is the field secretary for Earthcare for Southeastern Yearly Meeting; and Kallan Benson is a Friend from Annapolis, Maryland and a “Fridays for Future” striker.’

The webinar is hosted by FWCC and a network of Friends across the Quaker spectrum. These include those affiliated with FWCC, Evangelical Friends Church – North America, Friends United Meeting, Friends General Conference, Quaker Earthcare Witness, the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva and other unaffiliated Friends.

Friends are rightly concerned about sustainability. I could wish, though, there was wider recognition of the fact that a world population growing at the rate of a billion every twelve years is not sustainable, not by any stretch of the imagination
