Local Meeting actions in August and September 1914

The news pages of the Friend in August and September 1914 show many Meetings taking action. Darlington offered its Meeting house as a hospital: Llandrindod Wells and Devonshire House opened daily for prayer and silent worship: Wycombe looked for spare land for growing food and made jam with otherwise waste fruit.

Croydon reported (4 September), however, that Friends who had joined civic committees with enthusiasm had felt it necessary to withdraw when the committees undertook recruiting for the army. Later (2 October) it reported the resignation of two Friends from membership because they could not agree with the Society’s position.
