From the archive: …in a broken world

The war on the Western Front, after more than a year of conflict, had reached a stalemate by the autumn of 1915. Quakers were increasingly well informed of the situation and beginning to get more detailed information of events elsewhere in Europe.

Towards the end of 1915 news began to filter through to Britain of terrible massacres in Armenia. The Friend recorded a disturbing statistic on 15 October:

In the House of Lords, in course of a short debate on the Armenian massacres, Lord Bryce expressed his opinion that the report that 800,000 persons had been destroyed was probably true.
