From the archive: Day by Day

A weekly column, Day by Day, which summarised major national and international events, was published in the Friend until the end of 1915

Some extracts taken from the column are followed by other news items showing the impact of the first world war on Friends.

This, at the time, was the news that people were allowed to know!

April 20. It was announced that the proposed British delegation to the Women’s Congress at The Hague had been refused passports, but the Home Secretary had subsequently made a selection of 24 to whom permits would be granted.

April 22. According to a German report, 20,000 English and French troops were landed near Enos, in southern Thrace, Turkey.

April 23. A violent attack by the Germans to the north of Ypres, preceded by the release by them of a quantity of asphyxiating gas, was reported, and a considerable German advance.
