A guidebook detailing George Fox’s famous 1652 route across Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbria was celebrated this month at Swarthmore Meeting House.

Friends Way 2, by Martin Budgett and Jacquetta Megarry, completes the long-distance route from Pendle Hill to Swarthmoor that the earlier Friends Way 1 took as far as Sedbergh.

Jacquetta Megarry told the Friend: ‘The emphasis of Friends Way 2 was on Margaret Fell’s journey from mistress of Swarthmore Hall to mother of Quakerism, while also following George Fox’s 1652 route as closely as feasible. The route culminates at Swarthmore Hall, Margaret’s home for seventy years, where she was convinced by Fox’s preaching.’

Over thirty people gathered at Swarthmoor Meeting House for the launch on 20 May, with presentations led by Quaker professor Ben Pink Dandelion and the authors Martin Budgett and Jacquetta Megarry, who shared a video highlighting the features of the guidebook. The book includes specially-commissioned mapping and, like others in the Rucksack Readers series, is both rainproof and rucksack-friendly.

Friend Bill Shaw also conducted tours of the building and gardens. Some walkers completed a circuit walk that included Sunbrick Burial Ground and Birkrigg Stone Circle.
