Friends urge prime minister to seek peace

The Northern Friends Peace Board have signed a letter to the prime minister

Northern Friends Peace Board (NFPB) has put its name to a letter urging the prime minister to seek peace in a time ‘when communities are being fragmented by financial hardship and political uncertainty’.

The letter, signed by Philip Austin, coordinator of NFPB, points to recent tensions with Iran, as well as the uncertainty around Brexit and peace in Northern Ireland. It says: ‘As you lay out your agenda for the coming weeks, we ask that you prioritise the work of authentic peace. One built on justice and reconciliation. We ask that you seek peace by peaceful means, prioritising respectful dialogue, the use of international systems and networks and the measured and thoughtful deployment of negotiators and mediators.’

Martin Tiller, co-chair of Christian CND, also signed the letter. Christian CND tweeted: ‘Shortly after taking up the office of prime minister Boris Johnson wrote letters for each of the nuclear-armed submarines the UK has. We don’t want his finger on the nuclear button. We don’t want anyone’s finger on the nuclear button.’
