Irish Friends pray in the sea
Irish Friends were among members of Eco-Congegration Ireland who prayed in the sea on 30 August.
The event, in its second year, took place at Seapoint, on the south shore of Dublin Bay. The idea behind it, Rathfarnham Quaker Gillian Anderson told the Friend, was ‘to show solidarity and sympathy with the countless people around the globe who are already impacted by the rising sea levels of climate change’.
Gillian said: ‘Joining together in the sea, even for a small number, provides a meaningful opportunity for prayer and meditation on the importance of water for all of us, on our role in the environment and on the small differences each one of us can make towards the sustainable future of our beautiful blue planet’.
Participants read aloud and sang. They used some of the words from the encyclical of pope Francis, Laudato Si, with particular emphasis on the four elements of earth, air, fire and water. There was also time for quiet reflection.
