Twenty-two Quakers from New Earswick have volunteered to take part in an Alzheimer’s Society initiative designed to challenge how society thinks, talks and acts about dementia.

They are to become ‘Dementia Friends’, following a session by two psychologists from The Retreat, the York-based mental health facility.

Clinical psychologist Stephanie Petty and assistant psychologist Michelle Potts are ‘Dementia Friends Champions’ and part of an Alzheimer’s Society project to recruit four million Dementia Friends by 2020. Stephanie told the Friend: ‘We delivered a one-hour information session that delivers five key messages and asks those attending to turn this understanding into an action.’
