Friends promote tax bill
A vigil took place on the steps of Mount Street Meeting House
Friends from Manchester and Warrington Area Meeting held an hour-long silent vigil to draw attention to the Income Tax (Non-Military Expenditure) Bill.
The vigil took place on Sunday 23 October on the steps of Mount Street Meeting House in Manchester. Friends handed out 250 leaflets. Stewart Bailey of Central Manchester Meeting told the Friend that these explained how Quakers, while aware that not everyone shares their own conscientious objection to war, believe that many who do share their values still accept the right not to have taxes spent on war.
The leaflets highlighted how Friends hope the portion of their income currently allocated to military spending can be reallocated to existing government peace initiatives.
These initiatives include the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund.
