Friends prepare for week of witness
The Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice is taking place from 21 to 28 September
Quakers are getting ready for the Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice. The witness from 21-28 September will highlight connections between war, militarism and climate breakdown. Charlotte Cooper, peace lead for Britain Yearly Meeting, told the Friend: ‘The week of action is a project of the Arms, Militarism and Climate Justice working group, and Quakers in Britain have been one of the main initiating/coordinating organisations. In practice, that means we’ve been heavily involved in outreach to peace and climate justice movements, the design of communications materials, and connecting people to each other.’
Friends around the country are planning events, including Taunton Meeting. John Ainsworth, from the Meeting, told the Friend: ‘We hold a regular silent peace vigil on the fourth Wednesday of the month… as the September date is within this week, we are doing something different.’
‘We have written to the local press and other Local Meetings, faith groups and local organisations inviting them to join us at the vigil.’ The Friends will also display information about the witness at the vigil and the Meeting house.
The Northern Friends Peace Board has urged Friends to use the event to write to their MPs, highlighting the Alternative Security Review.
