Friends nominate Hawa Abdi for the Nobel Peace Prize
Somali physician nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by the American Friends Service Committee
The American Friends Service Committee has nominated the Somali physician Hawa Abdi for her provision of medical care and refuge to all – regardless of their clan, religious or political affiliation.
She opened a one-room women’s clinic on her family’s farm in 1983 and now, with her two physician daughters, continues to work at a camp of approximately 90,000 internally displaced people, mainly women and children. The operation, run through her foundation, includes a 400-bed hospital, an 800-student school and an adult education facility offering literacy and health classes for women.
