Friends’ memorial for FAU orderly
Friends in Kendal have paid tribute to a local conscientious objector
Kendal Quakers have paid tribute to Hugo Jackson, a Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) orderly, who died 100 years ago on the Western Front.
Friends at the Meeting house held a 100-year commemoration at the Kendal War Memorial on 27 May to remember the Quaker conscientious objector (CO).
Hugo Jackson was killed by a shell at Aisle on 27 May 1918 as he was transporting wounded soldiers to Mont-Notre-Dame Military Hospital.
Chris Bullard, from Kendal Meeting, told the Friend that the Meeting stood in silence for ten minutes and laid a wreath of white poppies during a reading about Hugo Jackson.
He added: ‘He is remembered on the Kendal War Memorial. His death, and that of his fellow FAU driver Norman Gripper, a Quaker from Blackburn, are recorded in an article headed “The Peace Service of the Society of Friends” in the Friend of 7 June 1918.’
Hugo Jackson was born in 1890 and educated at the Quaker School in Stramongate, Kendal.
He was a science teacher at Sidcot Quaker School, Somerset.
He resigned his position at the school to join the FAU. Chris Bullard said: ‘The [Friend] article wrongly states he was educated at Sidcot Quaker School. Too late for a correction, I suppose!’
