Friends lay down peace vigil

A monthly Quaker peace vigil in London’s Trafalgar Square will take place for the last time at noon on Saturday. The vigil has been held in the Square every month since 1 May 2004, when Friends in Forest Hill Meeting were moved to testify against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A meeting of regular participants recently decided that the vigil will be laid down as a monthly event, mainly because attendance has been reduced by death, health reasons and people moving out of London. But they were clear that many Friends want to explore other possibilities for a Quaker witness to peace in Trafalgar Square.

Hock Lim of Forest Hill Meeting told the Friend: ‘It is a testimony to Quaker perseverance and the commitment of some Friends that we have managed to hold a monthly vigil without a miss in those seven years’.
