Quakers are planning to take part in a ‘faith bridge’ in the next phase of Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests starting on 7 October. The Christian Climate Action group has urged people of faith to book the time off to join the ‘bridge’ which it said would be held with ‘worship and 24-7 prayers’. Penzance Friends are just one group of Quakers who have signalled their intention to join the ‘Nationwide Rebellion’ in the autumn as part of their witness against the climate crisis, alongside people from other faiths, including Buddhists and Jews. The ‘faith bridge’ at Westminster will run alongside plans to ‘peacefully shut down all roads into Westminster in central London and nonviolently disrupt the government’ as well as targeting ‘corporations, ministries and infrastructure that maintain our toxic system’.

According to Christian Climate Action, the group is bringing song, dance, prayer, learning, creating, music, Muslim call to morning prayer, mass-meditation, workshops, talking and grief circles, and traditional Jewish practices such as Sukkah building and davening to the occasion. It says: ‘Humanity is ready to stop harming and to start repairing the harm we have done together, now we are creating the most beautiful world our hearts know is possible.’
