Friends in vigil for Tory conference
Quakers in Manchester held three vigils during the Conservative Party Conference
Central Manchester Quakers organised three vigils during the Conservative Party Conference to remind politicians of the urgency of the climate crisis.
Valerie Clark, co-clerk of Central Manchester Meeting, told the Friend that Quakers from ‘many nearby Local Meetings’ also took part. ‘At least ten Friends, including Paul Parker, recording clerk, on two occasions, stood in peaceful silence for an hour holding placards, while other Friends handed out flyers. Some passers-by praised our unusual, silent way of doing things which was in sharp contrast to the extreme noise from protesters nearby.’
Meanwhile, ‘to uphold the political process – and what Friends were doing outside’ – there was a ‘drop-in’ Meeting for Worship for two days during the conference.
