Friends in Burundi face unrest

Friends are called to remember those dealing with upheaval in Burundi

by Tara Craig 29th May 2015

David Bucura of the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) has called on Quakers worldwide to remember those dealing with the ongoing political upheaval in Burundi.

The city of Bujumbura has been at the centre of a failed military coup. Its inhabitants continue to face significant disruption, and a number of Friends have left the country as a result.

A statement written on behalf of several Quaker organisations was recently issued (see bit.ly/BurundiStatement.) It said: ‘We know that a path out of the crisis in Burundi is still possible and stand in support of all those who work for a peaceful and just path forward. We hope that you will join us in holding Burundi in the Light.’

Among the signatories of the statement are Friends World Committee for Consultation, Quaker United Nations Office, (New York), and Quaker Peace & Social Witness.
