A Quaker who wrote and self-published a book about homelessness has had his work turned into a play. Norwich Friend Robert Ashton’s Any Spare Change? has been adapted into a short play and performed at the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich.

Robert Ashton said: ‘It all started when Antoinette Moses saw a tweet about the book from Writers Central.’ As an ex-University of East Anglia teacher of scriptwriting, and trustee at the theatre, Antoinette Moses suggested turning the book into a play and subsequently wrote the script. The play was performed to seventy people by Robert Ashton and four other actors.

Robert Ashton told the Friend: ‘From the conversations afterwards, it was clear that we had touched people and made them think. One of the actors has suggested we do more performances, and I’ll be suggesting a performance at Norwich Meeting House, as well as in other areas, perhaps.’

All proceeds of the book go to St Martins homelessness charity. St Martins said it was a ‘fantastic play’ and ‘brilliantly written – great acting based on the true stories of people on the helterskelter of life – it could be any of us’.
