Friends gather for UN Peace Day

Quakers mark the International Day of Peace

A Meeting for Worship to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace was held on the afternoon of Thursday 21 September at the Quaker Service Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Established in 1981 by a unanimous UN resolution, the event provides a globally shared date ‘for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace’.

The day is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme for 2017 is ‘Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.’ The International Day of Peace is observed around the world each year on 21 September.

Friends across Britain have been involved in UN Peace Day in a variety of ways; for instance, Abergavenny Quakers invited Friends and members of the public to join them for part of the day for reflection and hope in the Hedd Wen peace garden.

The peace project at Hedd Wen peace garden, Meeting room and flat is now five years old. A minute of silence was held at 12 noon and there was music and singing from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.
