Paul Parker, recording clerk of Britain Yearly Meeting, recently took part in an interfaith event at the Islamic Cultural Centre at Regents Park Mosque in central London.

Some twenty representatives of faith groups, including Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders, attended the event on 16 January. Organisers described it as ‘an act of solidarity’ in the wake of the killings in Paris earlier this month.

Among the speakers were Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, Laura Janner-Klausner, rabbi to the Movement for Reform Judaism, Vivian Wineman, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and Bessie White, of the Quaker Committee for Christian and Interfaith Relations.

Paul told the Friend: ‘It was a moving occasion, and one at which all recognised that we share a common humanity and a commitment to living peaceably with one another. It was good, as a Quaker, to stand alongside other people of faith, some of whom feel their beliefs are being misunderstood or under threat, and to express our solidarity.’
