Quakers join ‘End Austerity Now’ march

Quakers were among tens of thousands of activists who took part in last Saturday’s End Austerity Now marches in Britain.

Before the London march, some twenty Friends met at St Ethelburga’s Centre on Bishopsgate. They had travelled from as far afield as Birmingham, Bury St Edmunds, Norwich, Saffron Walden and Watford. London Meetings represented included Forest Hill, Ealing, and Westminster. Members of Young Friends’ General Meeting were also present.

Following worship, the group joined the march, walking alongside activists who were protesting against cuts to housing, the NHS and the welfare system. Anne Wilkinson of London Quakers told the Friend that she could also see Quakers marching with other groups.

End Austerity Now was organised by the People’s Assembly Against Austerity. Marches took place across the country, with the key events in London and Glasgow.

So how is this to be financed? The aims are admirable, but one must be pragmatic as to the means of doing this.
