Friend takes issue with army adverts
Ellis Brooks has written about army recruitment in The Big Issue
A London-based Friend has criticised the British army recruitment adverts to ‘find where you belong’ in an article in The Big Issue.
Ellis Brooks, writing in the 19 January edition of the magazine, argued that research suggests that exposure to war increases the likelihood that soldiers would behave in violent ways towards themselves and others.
In the article he quoted research from Medact that suggests young people recruited to the military are at higher risk of post-traumatic stress, self-harm and suicide. The new adverts’ ‘belonging’ message, he argued, attempts to mislead recruits by suggesting their mental health will be looked after.
