Friend in Baltic ‘walk for peace’
'I will engage with as many people as I can to help raise the profile and awareness of peace in this world.’
A Cornwall Friend is walking 700 miles from Tallinn to Warsaw in the name of peace.
Paul Haines, from Come-to-Good Meeting, started the Baltic walk for peace earlier in May, walking from Tallinn (Estonia), to Riga (Latvia), Vilnius (Lithuania) and then Warsaw (Poland).
‘This follows a number of walks for peace I have made, including in 2015 from Rome to Jerusalem.’ His website ‘Links to Peace’ is ’a database of groups and organisations working for peace’, he told the Friend.
Paul is wearing a peace flag and signs with information about his walk. ‘I will also carry one of my books in which I ask people to write their Message of Peace. I will engage with as many people as I can to help raise the profile and awareness of peace in this world.’
By May 24, Paul had crossed the border from Estonia to Latvia which made him think of 23 August 1989 and The Baltic Way. ‘This was when two million inhabitants of the Baltic states joined hands forming a human chain from Tallinn though Riga to Vilnius. It was a peaceful political demonstration expressing unity, freedom and a desire for independence.’
The Quaker is raising donations for Children of Peace, which funds organisations helping Israeli and Palestinian children.
