An extension to Friargate Meeting House in York has been shortlisted for the Press People’s Award in the York Design Awards.

Readers of The Press, a local paper, will vote for the award.

Phase one of the Meeting house project is complete, with phase two on track for completion in late autumn this year. The initial extension involved the creation of a new Quiet Room accessible from both the garden and the existing Meeting house. A new Garden Room has been built for small meetings. The garden has been redeveloped to make it accessible for both young and old.

The annual York Design Awards ‘seek to celebrate the very best of modern design in new buildings, restorations and “public space” projects’ in one of England’s most historic cities. The winners will be announced on 24 June.

Phase two will include the underpinning of the present building, the addition of an upper floor with a number of small rooms, and the opening up and refurbishment of the foyer.

‘The aim is to improve the visitor experience of the Meeting house as a welcoming, light and friendly area conducive to sitting, chatting and reading. We see this as steps towards the creation of a Quaker Centre in York,’ John Harris of Friargate Meeting told the Friend.
