Fleabag cites inspiration for Quaker Meeting scene

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has revealed the inspiration for the Quaker Meeting scene in Fleabag

A new book by writer and actor Phoebe Waller-Bridge has revealed the inspiration behind the scene in her hit series Fleabag that was set in a Quaker Meeting.

Writing in Fleabag: The Scriptures, released on 12 November, the creator said the venue was introduced to her by actor Andrew Scott, who played the priest she falls in love with in the critically-acclaimed show.

She says the two were in Soho, discussing the possibility of him playing the role, when the Sherlock actor said: ‘I want to show you something’.

According to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, he then led her through the streets to ‘a small door that boasted a sign: Quaker Meeting. There was no one there, just a few signs to remind you not to talk in the Meeting room… We walked into the room, sat there alone, the two of us, breaking their only rule for another hour.’

‘When we eventually left, he turned to me: “Let’s do it.” We filmed the Quaker scene in the same place we’d met that day. Andrew brought more to this character than can be summed up in words.’
