Firbank Fell, where George Fox preached, has become part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park despite being in the neighbouring county Cumbria.

The move came into effect on Yorkshire Day, 1 August, when the park expanded by almost a quarter. The new area includes parts of both Cumbria and Lancashire and will add 161 square miles to the park. It now covers 841 square miles.

Brigflatts Meeting is the closest Quaker Meeting to Firbank Fell. Clerk Pam Coren told the Friend: ‘This is a welcome move, Firbank Fell is well worthy of National Park status. Being in the Yorkshire Dales National Park does make resources available for conservation and support for rights of way, and they provide good upkeep of footpaths, stiles and signs.’
