A newly launched Fair Funerals pledge is calling on undertakers to help tackle funeral poverty.

The pledge was unveiled by Quaker Social Action (QSA) on 9 June. QSA hopes Friends will visit the website to sign the pledge. It asks funeral directors across the UK to make three key commitments.

These are: to recognise that funerals can be expensive and that many people struggle with the cost; to make their most affordable funeral package visible to the public, including third party costs; and to charge clear prices for goods and services so that people know what they’re buying.

‘The sooner we can get funeral directors in all areas of the UK signed up, the more people we can help find a funeral they can afford,’ said funeral poverty officer Heather Kennedy.

‘Now, when people see the Fair Funerals pledge logo, they will be able to ask about a simple funeral, or an itemised quote.’

Funeral poverty in the UK has increased by fifty per cent, to £131 million, in the last five years, according to insurance specialist SunLife.
