The Leaveners gear up for the summer

A Quaker arts project is gearing up for a summer of activities that explore Quaker spirituality through music, drama and film.

After leading the ‘big group singing session’ at Britain Yearly Meeting on Sunday 29 May, the Leaveners are hoping that many Friends will want to go further in exploring the interaction of art and faith. ‘Drama and music can help us address things in different ways,’ said Lauren Parkes of the Leaveners. ‘It’s also a lot of fun.’

She is keen to emphasise that many Leaveners’ events are open to people of all ages. Their youngest ever participant was ten. Their oldest have been in their eighties.

‘There’ll be fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds singing alongside people in their seventies,’ explained Lauren, referring to a choral weekend in June that will explore the lives of George Fox and James Naylor.

Later in the summer, there will be an animation weekend for eleven- to sixteen-year-olds. The Leaveners will also be working with Young Friends General Meeting to run an event looking at spirituality and the arts.
