Experimenting boldly

James McCarthy wonders just how much of a priority a new book of discipline should be?

I was excited when I first saw that there might be a new Quaker faith & practice. I value Quaker faith & practice highly and I have often come across a piece of writing and thought ‘that would go well in the next edition’.  Then I had a chance conversation with a Friend. He was depressed at the thought of another red book. His reasons? It would absorb time and energy at a time when other challenges are more pressing for our Society. I could see what he meant. I envisaged committees meeting for months and years. Their members would be some of our more committed and skilful Friends. Staff at Friends House would serve these committees; the project, being centrally mandated, would get high priority; other work would be squeezed in around it.
