The steering group of the Quaker ‘Experiment with Light’ has launched a new website and app.

The free app can be downloaded onto phones, and enables users to discover what Experiment with Light is, where it comes from, and how to join a group, as well as accessing the meditations. The website is hosted on the Quaker Meetings Network, which was launched in October 2019 following the 2017 Yearly Meeting Gathering in Warwick. Keith Walton, co-founder of the initiative and member of Wandsworth Meeting, said that a group of volunteers from all over the UK looked at many existing websites to gather ideas. Edwina Hughes from the steering group said: ‘Experiment with Light is a Quaker practice which is based on early Friends’ discoveries. It was devised in 1966 by Quaker and theologian Rex Ambler following his study of early Friends’ writings. He wanted to discover what it was that made them so sure, so centred, so willing to suffer privations to keep alive their faith. He discovered a process by which the Light may be accessed.’

The meditations app has been designed and developed by a Friend from Godalming Meeting, Alain Foussat. ‘After seven years of trying to get this project going, we contacted Alain and a few months later our app was released on Apple App Store and the Google Play Store,’ said Edwina Hughes. ‘We are delighted with the result: a beautiful, simple-to-use and practical app (it works without internet access). You can download it by typing in “Experiment with Light” into either store.’
