Expats are migrants, too

Barrie Mahoney offers a personal reflection on the migrant crisis

From the time that we moved to the Canary Islands, each year has brought with it attempts by migrants to land on the islands. Some have been successful, whilst the police, as well as Frontex, the organisation responsible for promoting, coordinating and developing European border management, have thwarted others. Most migrants are from Sub-Saharan Africa and are in search of a better life and prospects in Europe. The arrival of migrants reached a peak of 32,000 in 2006, but fell to around 300 in 2014, which was mainly due to increased patrolling and effective border controls.
