Sheila Terry moves on from Charney Manor

The end of an era at Charney Manor, the Quaker conference and retreat centre in Oxfordshire, was marked with a celebration on Saturday 5th February.

Sheila Terry, who has been the manager for thirty-three years, was given a special ‘send off’ to mark her retirement from the centre and to celebrate her contribution during that time.

‘When she first came to the centre it was facing a very uncertain future’, said Gordon Matthews, who was a resident Friend at Charney Manor in the late eighties and early nineties. ‘Sheila took on the challenge and turned the place around.’

Gordon reminded the Friend that Sheila had first come on a temporary basis and had stayed for three decades! ‘

She has played a key role in the transformation of Charney Manor, especially in the development of its facilities and has overseen major developments there. She has also contributed to the peaceful, welcoming, atmosphere that we all associate with the centre today. She will be much missed.’

As well as conferences, training events for religious and other groups, Charney Manor hosts its own programme of guided retreats which reflect current and ongoing concerns among Quakers in Britain.

The centre is twelve miles south-west of Oxford in the Vale of the White Horse.
