Encountering suicide
World Suicide Prevention Day is on 10 September. Chrissie Hinde offers a personal reflection.
There has been such a lot in the media about suicide recently. Robin William’s suicide was well-publicised and much talked about. Suicide has featured on many TV and radio programmes in recent months, including the very moving Channel 4 documentary The Stranger on the Bridge, in which Jonny Benjamin described his search for the passing stranger who saved him from jumping off Waterloo Bridge in 2008. It seems we are moving into a new climate of openness around this deeply troubling subject. As a Friend of seventeen years standing, I wonder if Quakers are ready to embrace this new level of openness in our Meetings.
